Read The Fabric of the Cosmos by Brian Greene....explains a whole shitload of this stuff in terms that most people can understand.

As for the Black Hole tinfoilery....Black Holes ALL evaporate via the emission of radiation and other lovely complex thingies like Hawking radiation etc...their rate of evaporation increases exponentially as their mass decreases. The Black Holes generated by the LHC will be in existence for such a short period of time (10 ^39 IIRC) that the LHC won't be able to directly detect them, instead it will detect them by the shower of exotic particles and energy release caused by its evaporation. Er....think I should have mentioned the Schwazchild radius in there somewhere....cocks.

Also I thought that I would add, I read in several different places (can't remember exactly where, I'm sure you could google it) that the theory that allows for black holes to exist is unable to be a viable theory WITHOUT the addition of hawking radiation. There's a similar failsafe that has to do with strange matter but I know a fuckton less about that.
