Restricting Thunderdome Access for minors

miners always get the shaft.

have a click-through pop-up if you can make it only pop up the first time someone accesses the dome... phrase it generically that you must be of the legal age to view objectionable content such as explicit sexuality, nudity, etc etc w/e.

i think that would cover all the bases/asses, right?

Recommendations: Whatever you do, require the user to enter their age and press an "accept" button of some kind.

Okay, having some experience as an Admin at a message board, I have an idea you could use to restrict access, but it will be VERY time consuming and a huge pain in the ass. That said, it WILL work.

Add every member of the forums that is 18+ to a user group named Adults or something like that. Edit Thunderdome's settings so access to it is restricted to only members of usergroup: Adults. If you do it right, minors might not even be able to see the board in the main directory. It should be easy enough to sort new users out this way since new accounts are admin activated here; the problem will be in sorting out the >9000 pre-existing accounts.

A simple 'Are You 18?' check will suffice. You comply with all laws. Follow MPB's advice.

Check with a lawyer, make sure you have in place what is needed to avoid any messy legal complications. Otherwise I can see a scenario involving a court case and access to the user database.

Of course nobody would bring such a frivilous lawsuit against the owners of this site . . . oh, wait.

are threads still moved by mods to the thunder dome? you might want to make sure that people get the prompt/warning when they hit refresh or whatever

bang they just agreed LEGALLY that they are responsible for there actions with-in there and waved any legal right for there soccer moms to sue you.

So now that we got that out of the way

Putting an invisible age category into the user profile (When you register), and having it check to see if you're 18+ whenever you try to join the dome. Complies with everything, because if the user is under 18, but marks that they're older, the fault goes to the user, not the site.

Same idea as a 'check if you're 18' kinda fix, except much more in-detail and less open to interpretation by legal forces.

As long as you say 18 and older only and you have a drop box that asks the user to put in thier birthdate your clear. soccermoms whatver the case you are legally 100% safe from litigation and the parent will only be asking thier child why they lied about thier age to get into the forum that clearly read 18+ only.
