Re: Composing a letter to police
Quote:
[Officer's name],
I am writing to you on behalf of the anti-scientology demonstrators known collectively as 'Anonymous.' By now, you're aware that these protests are planned as a long-term campaign against Organized Scientology. We have no doubts this raises a number of questions in your mind, and a number of concerns as well. It is my purpose here to answer your questions and address your concerns.
First, let me assure you that we intend to protest in a strictly legal manner. We have no interest in intimidating, bullying, or being violent towards anybody. We appreciate your help in ensuring that none of us are actively intimidated, bullied, or assaulted.
One of the first questions on your mind, most likely, is why we wear masks. The Church of Scientology would like to persuade you that it is to intimidate them - they would liken us to the KKK, protesting outside a predominantly black southern-baptist church. This could not be further from the truth.
We wear masks and take steps to hide our identity because Organized Scientology has demonstrated a pattern of cruel behavior towards critics. They have stalked, assaulted, harassed, and even framed critics. Organized Scientology has a number of convictions with time served for doing just this. Sadly, they have far more success stories, where they actively destroy the careers and personal lives of their critics. We would be happy to provide you with further details (and evidence backing up our claims) if you remain skeptical.
We also intend no harm to members of the Scientology. We consider them to be victims of a mind-control cult and global pyramid scheme. It is our hope to educate and liberate these people. Intimidating them is not part of our plan.
And despite what they say, they are unintimidated. The cult's leadership is certainly concerned, as we've demonstrated our numbers and our resolve, but Scientologists themselves are unafraid of us, and rightly so. We mean them no harm. They are unhappy at what they perceive as unjust criticism of their beliefs, but they will not listen to these criticisms. Rather, they take photos of us, hire private investigators to track us, attempt to have us arrested, attempt to label us terrorists, and in general take every step possible to shut us up and deny us our constitutional rights.
We would like to open up a line of dialog with you. The first issue we wish to resolve is to disambiguate the law - it would be useful for us to have it in writing whether or not we need protest permits, whether or not we are permitted to wear masks (and what ordinance prohibits it, if not), whether or not we are permitted to carry signs, to stand in place, how far we must keep from the Scientology Org entrance, and so on. I assure you that any direction you provide us here will be followed without exception.
I would welcome a face-to-face meeting whenever it is convenient for you. I will be contacting you by phone shortly to arrange one.
Thank You,
XXXX

Ideally this would be sent by the person volunteering to be the liaison. Again, I don't know all the details of the current situation, and depending on whether first contact has been made or not it may change the style or tone of the letter.
