Oh... it's much worse than just towing it out in the middle of nowhere and sinking it. It may be of Panamanian registry, but it's in dock in a Dutch territory. I imagine Dutch environmental laws are as strict, if not more strict, than US ones.

You can't just knowingly tow and sink a shipload of crap like this. Nor can you knowingly turn it over to a scrapyard without first taking care of the health risk.

I think it's a little premature to say, "this thing will never sail again." We don't know the actual extent of the contamination. Based on Woodcraft's description though, it sounds like it would (at the very least) be expensive as hell to mitigate. I think the ship's value is something like $13MM... with FSSO holding about $3MM in equity in it.

However you slice this -- it's going to cost 'em a bundle. Especially since it's dry-docked in a port under the control of a country that's not going to let them slink away in the night. This thing isn't going anywhere soon -- as long as it's clear the eyes of the world are on it.

A bit of srs bizness - can I suggest for all those ex's on the boards here, that if you've been on that rusty tin bucket, get a cancer screening just for your own peace of mind if nothing else. I'm not sure how that works in the US, but I know in Australia the Cancer Coucil will point you in the right direction to get a quick and thorough cancer screen done. If you're at all worried, and really, you have every right to be, please look into this and make sure to get a copy of the report from the screen.

Sent the editors at the Sun an email detailing the asbestos issue and the unbelievable hypocrisy that the Freewinds held a "pollution prevention" seminar onboard. Hopefully, the irony is newsworthy.
