Each person in Scientology guilty of crime should be held accountable... but...

1) states evidence... taking down the whole enchilada is worth something...

2) Get someone to believe something absurd and you can make them do thing unimaginably evil. This was the foundation of all cult mind control.

Yes, they are still guilty of their actions. And once they have paid for their crimes, they need help. They were victims as well. This doesn't excuse their behavior, nor should it figure into their pennance. However, it doesn't mean they're evil. There are only a few at the top who are really evil.

I think TD is acting like an asshole, but at the same time I do feel sorry for him. He looked so... defeated, soulless and almost lost in the CNN interview. I wonder how his mother feels about all this - if it was my son I'd be worried sick.

Well if there is one thing L . Ron can be credited for it is developing a psychological technology & method for turning perfectly good, well-meaning people into evil sociopaths. Fortunately the effect is reversible in many cases.

That's giving him too much credit, IMHO. He was a predator, not a thinker.

Actually, I think L. Ron Hubbard was quite intelligent. The problem was, he used his gifts towards a twisted end, and it ended up twisting him. I think it was Nietsche that said, "When you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes into you."

Fair enough. I didn't really mean that he wasn't intelligent, I just don't think the means by which to do it were crafted from jump. Which is what I meant, but worded it extremely poorly.

He started out as a hustler, trying to hustle the government for medical benefits, then trying to hustle his way as a writer, and then trying to hustle his way as an occultist, and then trying to hustle his way as a religious leader. I think it all just blew up in his face, and a hell of a lot faster and bigger than even he imagined. I put myself in his shoes, and I imagine he was fucking TERRIFIED, most of the time. It's like Victor Frankenstein's creation waking up...

More like a perfect example of when someone does not get the requested psychological help he needs. He might have been a successful SF writer rather than have the means to live out his bizarre real life fantasy and turn it in to a mythos.
