Atlanta, GA - Ideal Org Recon
i apologize in advance for the tl;dr posts. i went out on two different occasions and did some recon around the area of the new ideal org on roswell rd. the following posts contain a collection of pictures and my thoughts/observations on the area. unfortunately i have to attend a wedding on the day of the next protest so i thought i could help contribute this way since i can't be there on the 10th.
![]() this is a map of the area around the ideal org. the org is the red star on the map. the red letters correspond to pictures i took of the area to help orient the pictures when you are viewing them. here are the full collections of the pictures i took: org photos: your_name_here138/recon/org - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting surrounding area: your_name_here138/recon - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting if there are any questions about things i didn't cover i might be able to address them. after taking two trips out there i'm sure i made observations about the area that i'm forgetting to add to these posts. Re: Atlanta, GA - Ideal Org Recon
the ideal org
the church of scientology idea org is located at 5395 Roswell Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30342. it is located ~1/2-3/4 of a mile inside 285 on exit 25 (Roswell RD exit). the exit is 2 exits west of GA400. the org sits on the left side of the street when coming from 285 at the intersection of roswell rd and glenridge dr. ![]() this is a google map of the ideal org and the intersection of roswell rd and glenridge dr. the org is the big building in the top right quadrant of the photo. the pictures i took of the org itself can be found here: your_name_here138/recon/org - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting ![]() main entrance of the ideal org facing roswell rd. ![]() side of the ideal org facing glenridge dr. the sidewalk for the area is on the same side as the org. it is a good sized sidewalk and it wraps around on roswell rd and glenridge dr. the advantage of this is it gives us a lot of room to spread out and basically "surround" the org which would definitely be visually impressive for people in the area. the disadvantage is we lose out on the prime grass realestate that we have at our current protest location. we would have to be careful because i don't want people harrassed for "trespassing" and i'm not sure where their property technically starts. the foot traffic in the area is minimal to none. both times i was there i didn't see a single person using the sidewalk. but there is signifigantly more car traffic in the area and at the roswell rd/glenridge dr intersection where we would be located is quite busy. the sidewalks are situated in such a way to allow for epic flier distribution to drivers stopped at the traffic light. ![]() picture down roswell rd towards the intersection with glenridge. the sidewalk on the left is the one in front of the org. ![]() picture of the roswell rd/glenridge dr intersection. the org is just out of frame on the right across the street. there seems to be a decent amount of sidewalk to spread out on to flier the intersection. my pictures do not do the traffic justice as i tried to wait for short breaks in the traffic to snap pictures so cars wouldn't block too much of the frame. ![]() this is a picture from the post office parking lot directly behind the org. glenridge dr is just to the left out of frame. this lot would be mostly empty on saturday but the P.O. will be open so i'm not sure how they would feel about us being in the lot. perhaps someone could talk to someone in charge there to see how they would feel about us being in the immediate area. the property immediately surrounding the roswell rd/glenridge dr intersection consists of a small apartment/condo complex across glenridge dr. and a larger apartment complex across roswell rd. basically its just two apartments and the org at the intersection. Re: Atlanta, GA - Ideal Org Recon
locations directly around the org
in this post i'll touch on the area in the immediate vicinity of the org. here is a map i made from google maps that highlights some key features i will address ![]() Target shopping center the first area i will touch on is the yellow marking. they are currently constructing a massive shopping center in the area. ![]() ![]() it will eventually be a target/home depot/publix with an insane amount of parking. they seem to be constructing it rather quickly as when i first went out in march it was a giant patch of dirt and they now have the basic structure for the target and two-story parking underway. i know nothing about construction so i'm not really sure when it would be finished. while i'm sure it won't be finished in time for may, it could be finished in later months and potentially would be a great place for parking/flier distribution. the company developing it is semblar. their number is (404)847-1800. i called them to see if i could get an approximate date of completion but the lady on the phone said no date has been set so she really had no idea when it would be done. i will call periodically in the future to see if a date has been established. Professional Office Park the green area on the map is a small professional park. the offices seem to be closed on the weekend (at least they were on sunday) so the parking lots will potentially be empty. ![]() ![]() both buildings have a decent amount of parking (more in the rear) and the two lots are connected by a small set of stairs. the sidewalk in the area was apparently designed by a moron. the sidewalk i'm standing on to take the picture just ends right there for no reason. it then continues on the other side of the street (and eventually runs in front of the org). perhaps the lot would be a good gathering place as getting to the sidewalk in front of the org is easy from there. Townhouses the blue area on the map is a small townhouse complex. not really much to say about it other than that. ![]() this picture was taken from the professional park i just spoke about previously. Waffle House and Gas Station the light blue area consists of a phillips 66 gas station and a waffle house and plastic surgery building that share the same parking lot (woot waffles and a boob job). ![]() i'm picturing an epic anon /i/nvasion of the WaHo for post raid waffle-eating. ![]() this is a picture from the parking lot towards the org. the traffic light in the pic is the roswell rd/glenridge dr intersection and the org is peaking out from the trees just beyond that. also on the left of the frame in the bushes between the power lines is the marta bus stop. this seems like another potential staging point as it is quite close to the org. also the WaHo and gas station allow for food/supplies gathering before the protest. also nice about this location is it is right next to the marta bus stop that runs right by the org. just a little bit down the road from the WaHo there are some small businesses for more parking options. ![]() ![]() (more parking behind this building) U.S. Post Office the orange area on the map is the U.S. Post Office. it is directly behind the org and the back entrance to the org is connected to the P.O. driveway. ![]() this is the USPO and its parking lot. the org is the building off to the left in the picture. directly behind me is glenridge dr. i touched on the PO briefly in the last post. i don't know how they would feel about us parking/meandering around their parking lot on a saturday. Architecture Firm the purple marking on the map is i believe an architecture firm (i'm not 100% positive on that). ![]() this pic was taken from the USPO parking lot. the firm appears to be closed on the weekend (that should be double checked) and it has a decent amount of parking. Re: Atlanta, GA - Ideal Org Recon
major shopping/traffic area nearby
i thought this area garnered some attention because it is a very busy area with tons of parking and lots of people around. this area is almost exactly 1 mile from the ideal org. it is on roswell rd heading away from atlanta, across 285 from the org location. this area is centered around the intersections of roswell rd and hammond dr (locations E and F on the large map from the first post). in this area there are four shopping centers. this is the roswell rd/hammond dr intersection taken from the whole foods lot ![]() on the left corner of the intersection (location E) is the whole foods shopping center ![]() on the same side of the street as whole foods is this shopping center ![]() the lowes is across the street from the whole foods (location F) ![]() this shopping center connects with the lowes (lowes is just off frame to the right) ![]() this area originally peaked my interest when i took the first set of photos back in march. as i said before it is a high traffic area and the shopping centers are packed full of shoppers allowing for massive distribution of info. the distance from here to the org is just about 1 mile which isn't too bad of a walk for some people but it might be a decent trek in the summer heat (we currently walk ~0.4 of a mile from the taco bell to the current protest spot). ![]() this pic is from the whole foods area towards the org. the org is at the top of the hill in the distance. if you look on the right in the distance you can see the target/home depot/publix construction to get an idea of the distance. ![]() this is a picture of roswell rd from right near the org back towards the massive shopping complex. the area with the whole foods etc is at the top of the hill just past the bend in the distance. while this area is a decent distance away from the org, there is a lot of potential if people actually wanted to make the walk (perhaps a small strike force for interested people). the walk from here to the Co$ passes through a few (~4-5) very busy intersections including crossing the 285 bridge. there would be a ton of potential for passing out fliers at the intersections along the way and tons of sign waving to passing cars. maybe an idea would be to have a small group of people that are interested to take hour (say 11:30-12:30) to march to the org for lots of public attention along the way and meet up with the rest of the protest at the stop in front of the Co$. just some thoughts i had while i was taking pics. Re: Atlanta, GA - Ideal Org Recon
once again i apologize for the epic tl;dr posts. i hope the information helps some.
in this post i'm just gonna talk about some general observations i made about the area. there is a decent amount of parking in the area (more in a closer proximity to the org than our current location). the one observation is most of these parking lots are businesses that are closed on the weekends. that could be good or bad depending on how you feel. good cuz there will definitely be a spot and i doubt the business would get upset. but potentially bad if you are paranoid and think parking in an empty lot makes you a target for $cion PI ops. a marta bus also stops right in the area. from the time i spent there it seems the buses arrive more frequently than they do on shallowford. i know that the route 5 bus goes by there and you can pick it up at the lindbergh and dunwoody stations. there might be other routes i'm not sure about. ultrapoet might be able to shed some light on the bus info. roswell rd is a very busy road. it is a huge 4-lane (two lanes each side) road with tons of people heading towards sandy springs or to 285. from the ideal org heading away from atlanta (towards 285), roswell rd is a mostly commercial area. there are small businesses, gas stations, etc between the org and 285. on the other side of 285 it starts to get into very dense commercial areas with more traffic. there area is also slightly dispersed with apartment complexes. roswell rd from the org heading towards atlanta (south) quickly becomes residential with some seriously nice houses. i only went as far as mt. paran rd NE but there are some huge houses over there. glenridge is almost purely residential from the org until you get to the northside regional hospital complex. its most small neighborhoods and really nice townhomes/condos. all in all the area (especially south and east of the org) is decently upscale. it doesn't surprise me the Co$ is moving to wear some serious money is. the area north of the org is a little more ghetto than the other areas but it is a mix of apartments and businesses. i'm sure would love to know that a money-grubbing cult is moving in to their neighborhood. the foot traffic in the area is still very slim (didn't see a single person walking on the sidewalks) but the road traffic is much more steady than on shallowford rd and we would be right at nice-sized intersection. the sidewalk is great and it wraps around the front and side of the org on two roads allowing us to effective "surround" the org. the disadvantage is of course that the sidewalk is on the same side of the street as the org. this poses a problem as i'm sure they will be very srs bzns about the grassy areas. so we would have to find a decent location to set up caek tables, refreshments, etc. once again here are the links to the photos i took: ideal org: your_name_here138/recon/org - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting surround area: your_name_here138/recon - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting enjoy, spread the word, GO HIVEMIND GO! i'll add more later if anything i forgot comes to mind. **as a side note my partner and i grabbed a bite to eat at the WaHo after we took the pics. as we were finishing up this weird couple came in and sat down near us. they both wore their sunglasses inside the WaHo (and they actually pulled up the blinds around there table to let more light in >.>). they ordered drinks but ate their own food (cookies and stuff they brought in ziplock bags). they were both scouring the AJC. i couldn't really hear most of what they were talking about but both my partner and swore we heard the lady say at one point: (referring to what someone else said) "...and then she said, 'i'm not a damn scilon." probably nothing but both of us were kinda wtf.** Last edited by your_name_here; 04-14-2008 at 10:13 AM. |

Re: Atlanta, GA - Ideal Org Recon
This looks like a good place to actually be able to use bullhorns. I like it. Are we certain on it being up and running?

I would seriously, seriously recommend MARTA to go to and from the site. The 5 runs right down Roswell from Dunwoody Station to Lindbergh Station. You can even park at Dunwoody Station (not very far) and take the bus from there. Parking nearby is just asking for tag running. |

Re: Atlanta, GA - Ideal Org Recon
Great job with the thread, "YNH".
Since this is a slightly different, more crowded part of town, I think we need to hit the new org with full strength for the 10th. What do you guys think? Should we make our full presence known for this one, or should we have people protesting at both sites? |

Re: Atlanta, GA - Ideal Org Recon
Having places close by to get food and especially water as we go into summer will be excellent. A Waffle House only makes it moar epic.
I'm thinking at least for this first time we may be wisest to sacrifice the sidewalk and spread out along the opposite sides from the org. The public section would end as soon as you step off the sidewalk (correct me if I'm wrong, though) so that's a narrower space than you'd think. I'm sure they wouldn't need anything more than a foot on the grass to use as an excuse to go after someone. If we're on the opposite side, there's more space to work with and they can't touch us there (it might make the job of the police simpler too). I did notice we have the two "islands" at that intersection we could get anons positioned on to hand out fliers very easily. It wouldn't take more than 6-8 to cover every part of that intersection. As for splitting our forces, I don't think we have enough guaranteed attendance to effectively divide up at this point. The more impressive our presence the more attention we get from passerbys and we eat away at the scilon's sense of security when they realize their happy new home has already been found out. Just one anon sitting there with a sign was enough to put them on edge over the weekend. |

Re: Atlanta, GA - Ideal Org Recon
Just FYI, if you continue south on Roswell Road from the Ideal Org (away from 285) you'll run into Buckhead. Perhaps we could have a few people stationed at the intersection of Peachtree & Roswell Road (where the Roxy & countless bars, as well as massive amounts of car traffic are) giving out fliers ... It's a bit of a walk south on Peachtree from the Buckhead rail station, but I'm sure a bus runs by there ... Also, there are tons of small side-streets branching off of peachtree to allow for covert parking if you don't want to take the rail/bus.
Not saying move the protest there, but maybe 8 to 10 people to hand out fliers and such? |

Re: Atlanta, GA - Ideal Org Recon
There's a lot of traffic there all hours of the day. I've been down there at 10AM on a tuesday and there's still tons. But I suppose a mass movement of all anon from the ideal org after 4PM to Buckhead would be an interesting sight for all to see ... at least when compared to the 8 or 10 people I suggested before. We'd just need to inform Fulton Co. that we're moving the protest south after 4PM.
